Popular Post Ronn W
I am using Titebond liquid hide glue to build 3 bowfront drawers 3/4" thick made of 6 Layers of 1/8" bendable plywood. In the past I have been able to squeeze out lins of gluel on the surface ( back and forth) then use a rubber roller to easily rollout the glue. This week I started the first drawer front and ran out of glue from my 1 year old bottle. Grabbed the new bottle that was kept in the same place as the old (60 deg shop). As soon as I started rolling the glue it started to grab the roller and glue would stretch like mozarella when I lifted the roller off of the surface. I was committed so I rushed through the last 2 laminations and shoved it in the vacuun bag on its form. Next day the piece was removed and was fine. The guy at Titebond said that there is a slight variation from batch to batch of the % of solids in the glue. He suggest 3 work arounds. 1) Heat the glue up a little by placing bottle in heated water. I tried that this morning glue at about 80 degrees and it extented the time I had to roll it out but as the temperature dropped the glue got tacky real fast. 2) spray fine mist of water over the glue while rolling. That worked but hardly seems like a method that I care to use all the time. 3) thin glue just a little by putting water in the bottle and shaking it up. That stuff is so thick and the bottle so full that I don't think that would work. I took the bottle back to wood craft and, after testing it there, they agreed that it was not right. The bottles on their shelves had the same lot number so thye refund the cost. I went to roclker and bought a bottle (different lot number). Had the same problem. Has any one else had a similar experience.? How has your Liquid hide glue spread for you?
pkinneb
No issues but I use mine for chair parts primarily so different use case. I do always warm mine before use by placing the bottle in a bowl of warm/hot water which i find make it much easier to use. FWIW I use Old Brown hide glue: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00LFKIYRK/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&th=
dave07
Most likely you had bottles of glue from different batches. I would still try to dilute the glue with water, preheating it as pkinneb says. or try to find an analogue from another manufacturer, I use Elmer's or Lee Valley
