Von Posted December 11, 2024 Report Posted December 11, 2024 I find myself in need of a 5/16"-18 bolt for a chipbreaker. Anyone know a source? Looks like Taytools carries them but is out of stock. I'll make a trip to my local hardware store, but from what I've read elsewhere it can be a challenge to find a bolt whose head fits in the frog and I'm not up for a bunch of filing on this. Context is I bought an old cheap plane to turn into a scrub plane, realized it didn't have a chipbreaker, ordered a chipbreaker and but it didn't come with a bolt. I've bought another plane realizing that would likely be easier than getting the first one complete and am this close to tossing the first one in the scrap bin but my stubbornness won't let me do that without at least trying to make it whole. 2 Quote

gee-dub Posted December 11, 2024 Report Posted December 11, 2024 I hate it when what I think is going to be a cheap solution turns into something else. Unfortunately hand tools have escalated in price over the last decade or so to where used often just doesn't make sense for me anymore. I love my war era Millers Falls planes and have a lot of Grandpas old stuff. The plane I paid about $35 for back in the day . . . is now so much more than that. It just doesn't work for me anymore. I hope you find a source or another basket case you can cannibalize. 1 Quote
Tpt life Posted December 11, 2024 Report Posted December 11, 2024 Lots of variety on Amazon. Might just have to buy a stock bolt and modify. Quote
Von Posted December 14, 2024 Author Report Posted December 14, 2024 Pick up a machine-head screw at the HW store and was figuring out what I was going to need to do to cut and file it down to fit when I realized my chipbreaker didn't actually fit the plane. Even I can now give up on this plane, think of it as scrap parts (for what I'm not sure) and move on. Anyways, thanks for the suggestions. 2 Quote
