woodcanuck
This weekend I picked up an old(ish) #4 handplane and I want to use it as a guinea pig for trying out handplane restoration. I know Chris Schwarz's book is likely going to be referenced as the go-to guide, but while I ponder buying this and then wait for it to arrive, what other resources would people recommend for learning about the restoration process? Larry Marshall
The best advice is to do a google search on 'hand plane restoration' and you'll get a long list of places where guys have done it. Much depends on what you're after as tuning up a plane is a separate issue from restoring its finish, checking and dealing with damage, etc. Another search for 'sharpening hand planes' might also yield info you'll want. muddlermike
forgive the shameless blog plugging, but here's a video demo of restoring a bench plane: http://freshshavings.blogspot.com/2009/01/used-hand-planes-part-4-cleaning-and.html it's long and painful because it was done as a live demo with no editing, but I'm still getting emails from guys that found it helpful a year and a half later. Hopefully it helps. Mike
