duckkisser
i cut up some logs to turn into bowls. the wood has a very pungent smell and the grain tends to want to seperate as it dries. i figure its eather birch, aspen, or sycamore. im having a hard time turning the wood as it wants to chip and break and catch alot. anyone got any advice on how to turn/work it and is the wood just a bunch of junk that i should just toss in the garbage? i dont think its sycamore since it is a pale wood like maple. and the tree was a large tree 100 plus feet so im thinking its not birch so im leaning more towards aspen. mwatkins
Sounds like you've got some Aspen on your hands. How dry are the blanks? I've never turned Aspen but would imagine it would be a good green turning wood with sharp tools. I've used it after a few years drying without too much difficulty. The smell diminishes with age.
