Chris H
Does anyone know what causes this black streaking to occur in a pen? I have a picture from a day or two after the pen was finished, and another from about a week later. BEFORE: AFTER:
AceHoleInOne
What kind of wood is that? Figured maple? What finish did you apply? How long did you wait between coats. Looks like something is going on in the endgrain, looks thinner at the top of the pen. Not up on my penturning? Is adhesive used to attach the metal tube to the wood? Adhesive reaction? -Ace-
suiciedchild
I've had this happen, typically it's the fine sanding dust of the metal bushings that get shoved into the end grain that reacts to the finish.

Time between coats ranges from 60-90 seconds up to a few minutes. >>I've had this happen, typically it's the fine sanding dust of the metal bushings that get shoved into the end grain that reacts to the finish.<< I am guessin this is it. Any recomended preventative measures?
RenaissanceWW
when you are done sanding, try wiping the pen down with Naptha or alcohol to flush out any metal dust if you think you have hit the bushing. Let it try (a few seconds) then apply finish.
