Fordy9r
I have a millers falls #8 plane. It is in beautiful condition. I'm just trying to figure out if it is a smoothing plane. It's 9" overall length, 2" wide blade, with a frog of 45 degrees. Anyone?

TerryMcK
Those are the approximate sizes of a smoother so my guess from the description is yes. Can you post a picture of it?
TerryMcK
From the description of the dimensions it sounds like a smoother. Can you post a picture? I've just realised you had posted the same question twice
Mpride1911
According to this chart, it's equivalent to a Stanley No. 3.http://oldtoolheaven.com/bench/benchtable.htm

RichardA
It's a smoother, , as is the #9 The 9 is almost the same as a Stanley #4 the #8 is the about the same as a #3.
gee-dub
I've got a few MF tools that are my daily users. A #8 is about a Stanley #3 equivalent. For bench planes the number is generally based on the length of the sole or some modification of it (#9, #90, #90C). Lots of good info here. xxdabroxx
I know the only MF plane I have is really sloppy in the blade advance department. I turned it into a scrub plane.
4square
Small smoother. If everything is still tight and the mouth isn't beat up or chipped it's a pretty nice smoothing plane. A bit small for my large hands but my daughter has an old Stanley Bailey #3 (about the same size as the M/F #8) and loves it.
