Kid birthday delayed my weekend effort, I hope to work on the base this week. I really need to sand my panels also, the glue look ugly ;)

I still need to fine tune the back fingers, my template was off a bit, so I did most of them one by one. side panels started to bow a little too.

We need more pictures for other members :)

Just finished watching Mark's latest installment on assembling the base, deck, and case. Went to the shop, assembled the base and did my first trial fit. Still needs a little sculpting here and there but looks like all is coming out pretty close to plan  :) . Anyway I've enjoyed some of the pics from other members so I thought I'd offer a couple. I added  a little mineral spirits to highlight the color in one pic...thinking very seriously about leaving it au-naturale and would really appreciate some opinions.

Constructive feedback is a gift and I'm open to lots of presents. Hurry, though, because after a bit of close sanding this baby is gonna be glued, screwed, and ready for the lid.

Blu

That looks really good Blu.....I can only lightly suggest maybe a little more pillowing of the fingers.......Carl's , yours and mine look identical.

I am getting ready to apply the finish , all I have to do is mount the hinges and finish the straps (yeap , I am going for the whole enchilada).

in the enclosed picture the ebony bars in the lid are only lightly tapped in place , I put corner splines also , a picture will follow.

with regard to the straps I am debating on gluing the whole with of it or just half on account of cross grain situation.....Darrel Peart's book do not mention this......any suggestions?

I went for the 2 fingers base, I was not sure about which one I liked the most ;)

I finished my roundover and sanding this weekend. I was about to cut the rabbet for the plywood base then I stopped, not sure how I will attach the deck yet.

I also want to do the spline jig for the top panel spline. This will take me a while, but usefull for later projects.

You are sure ahead in the build :)

Well , it looks like I am finally getting there.....the color ended up a bit darker than I want it.....when I was testing the color I was using the bottom piece which is birch plywood ,  so when I spray the color on mahogany it look a much darker than on plywood , but I am still please with the results ( my wife says it looks great ! lol ).

Love the straps ! Damn I might have to make some now, it look so cool. I got behind on my project, but got time to sand and resand and pre-finish my stock this week.

I had glue spot showing up the first time, I did a lot of resanding.

I really need to use my real camera for pictures, the box look "blend" with my phone.

Things left to do:

Handles

Breadboard

Ebony plugs

hinges

Spline/straps (not sure yet)

Used Darell's formula 7 orange / 4 medium brown for the dye stain. I applied Danish oil vanish last night (not in pictures), not sure if I will put another vanish over for protection.

Yes Carl , those straps really kick it up a notch or two....I won't be using the handles , since they are merely decoration , because I don't thing they are strong enough to support the weight of the whole box  ,and there is plenty of looks with the fingers , ebony plugs and straps........your project looks really good , I think that maybe a little more gloss will make the grain pop and make look deeper .....one word of advise with the hinges , do not embed them just screw them on top , because of the difference in thickness between the top and breadboard ends , I didn't realize this till afterwords , so I had to put a shim between the top of the hinge and the top itself.
