thewoodwhisperer
Looking good! I'm working on the mortises for the plugs this week and will hopefully have the assembly of the case done as well. That should all be in Friday's video. Racing the clock here! Carl Olsen
Kid birthday delayed my weekend effort, I hope to work on the base this week. I really need to sand my panels also, the glue look ugly I still need to fine tune the back fingers, my template was off a bit, so I did most of them one by one. side panels started to bow a little too. We need more pictures for other members
PlayasTeo
That's looking good Carl , I thought you were showing one of my pictures.............both cases look pretty much the same.
Carl Olsen
Thanks, it actually look better now, I just sanded for 2 hours (only 60 grits for now) I did a quick mineral spirit test too
PlayasTeo
Wow! what a difference a little elbow grease can make.......what wood did you use ?
Carl Olsen
African Mahogany (Khaya), my lumberyard is really great for it.
JimFrey
Playas, I'm unclear as to your bottom. Is it a glued panel or plywood? Did you rabbit your deck or use a tongue and groove? Any chance of a picture of the whole bottom assembly. I'm planning on using the the three fingered base as well.
JimFrey
Sorry I just founrd tthe pic on the other thread.
Carl Olsen
For the peoples doing 9 fingers, do you plan using small ebony plugs ? or 3/8" ? I just finished "rasping" all the corners, I'm getting on the plugs part. (I have all punches), I thought a tiny smaller plugs might look more in proportion ?
thewoodwhisperer
I wouldn't go too much smaller. You still need to conceal a screw head and any less than 3/8" will start to be tricky to manage.
Carl Olsen
Ah yes thanks, point indeed, i guess ill stick with 3/8 easier overall.
mmonday
Just finished watching Mark's latest installment on assembling the base, deck, and case. Went to the shop, assembled the base and did my first trial fit. Still needs a little sculpting here and there but looks like all is coming out pretty close to plan . Anyway I've enjoyed some of the pics from other members so I thought I'd offer a couple. I added a little mineral spirits to highlight the color in one pic...thinking very seriously about leaving it au-naturale and would really appreciate some opinions. Constructive feedback is a gift and I'm open to lots of presents. Hurry, though, because after a bit of close sanding this baby is gonna be glued, screwed, and ready for the lid. ..Kev
Looking awesome Blu! Personally, I hate to add color to wood but, that's me.
PlayasTeo
That looks really good Blu.....I can only lightly suggest maybe a little more pillowing of the fingers.......Carl's , yours and mine look identical. I am getting ready to apply the finish , all I have to do is mount the hinges and finish the straps (yeap , I am going for the whole enchilada). in the enclosed picture the ebony bars in the lid are only lightly tapped in place , I put corner splines also , a picture will follow. with regard to the straps I am debating on gluing the whole with of it or just half on account of cross grain situation.....Darrel Peart's book do not mention this......any suggestions? Carl Olsen
I went for the 2 fingers base, I was not sure about which one I liked the most I finished my roundover and sanding this weekend. I was about to cut the rabbet for the plywood base then I stopped, not sure how I will attach the deck yet. I also want to do the spline jig for the top panel spline. This will take me a while, but usefull for later projects. You are sure ahead in the build
PlayasTeo
Well , I guess having made one before helps a bit.....that one is a shaker style with dovetails but without bracket feet , I agree with you on the two finger base.....I did not use a spline jig but cut everything by hand for the top , it is not hard at all to make this way
mmonday
PlayasTeo, thanks for the feedback and I agree that some pillowing would make the fingers more 'Greene and Greene' like. Lemme see what I can do..... Back to the shop. Blu
PlayasTeo
Well , it looks like I am finally getting there.....the color ended up a bit darker than I want it.....when I was testing the color I was using the bottom piece which is birch plywood , so when I spray the color on mahogany it look a much darker than on plywood , but I am still please with the results ( my wife says it looks great ! lol ). Carl Olsen
Love the straps ! Damn I might have to make some now, it look so cool. I got behind on my project, but got time to sand and resand and pre-finish my stock this week. I had glue spot showing up the first time, I did a lot of resanding. I really need to use my real camera for pictures, the box look "blend" with my phone. Things left to do: Handles Breadboard Ebony plugs hinges Spline/straps (not sure yet) Used Darell's formula 7 orange / 4 medium brown for the dye stain. I applied Danish oil vanish last night (not in pictures), not sure if I will put another vanish over for protection.
PlayasTeo
Yes Carl , those straps really kick it up a notch or two....I won't be using the handles , since they are merely decoration , because I don't thing they are strong enough to support the weight of the whole box ,and there is plenty of looks with the fingers , ebony plugs and straps........your project looks really good , I think that maybe a little more gloss will make the grain pop and make look deeper .....one word of advise with the hinges , do not embed them just screw them on top , because of the difference in thickness between the top and breadboard ends , I didn't realize this till afterwords , so I had to put a shim between the top of the hinge and the top itself.
