tim0625
Wood sometimes has some internal stresses that are released when it is milled some. You may come back in a day or so and it's moved like TIODS said and you have to do a little more milling on it before proceeding. First Post!! Welcome! You may come back in a day or so and it's moved like TIODS said and you have to do a little more milling on it before proceeding. First Post!! Welcome! Thanks TimWood (and TIODS). My brother has a sawmill and I learned from helping him what the release of those internal stresses could do to boards shortly after the milling process, but why I didn't think about that when I started milling the boards for projects is beyond me. I usually just jumped right in and starting joining everything the same day I planed it, so it was an "Aha!" moment when I heard Tommy say he stickered it and went back over it with a hand plane the next day. I am still afraid to take my hand plane to anything, but I will get there. Always learning...
Tpt life
Many guys here don't own a hand plane. Others own several. That he uses a hand plane is a slight distraction. The process of milling, stickering, and then verifying or touching up is valid even with a non hand tool shop.

Best way to overcome that fear..take a hand plane to EVERYTHING! Welcome.
Rick A McQuay
Usually he recommends milling to rough size, sticker overnight, then milling to final size. Which is how I was taught. Doesn't matter if you use a hand plane or jointer. Sometimes I do it, sometimes not, situation dictates.
