Brendon_t
There are some freshly cut logs by me on CL from a 70 year old tree. The wood seems to have a nice red heart wood and lighter sap wood. I read one Gargle article saying it was very hard and stable. I wouldn't mind picking up a log or two and cutting up tp use but would like to hear if anybody has had any success with it. The thing I fear reading that it is extremely dense is that it would be like hickory and destroy the cutting edge of everything it touches. Coop
I like hickory and pecan so much, I don't mind the sharpening bill. Go for it and report back!
Brendon_t
I'm about a sharpening id10T. I use the scary sharp method and yes, I can get some shave quality edges but I hate every second of it. Hearing about having to re sharpen a plane iron every 5 minutes while working hickory gives me hives.
Coop
Oops, sorry, I was thinking more in the line of ts blades.
Tpt life
There is some hype to get over. I re-evaluated my approach to Hickory after some goading from CStanford and found true sharp can tame Hickory. Five minutes is a bit of an exaggeration. It is tough, no lie. It is not catastrophically so.
