Complementary Woods

Hey guys, I need some help choosing a wood that complements cherry. Here is a picture of the general design. The biggest difference is that the doors will not be raised panel. The rails will resemble very closely to Marc's gadget station doors. And if you can't tell, the gadget station was a pretty big inspiration here. lol.

The side panels will be cherry ply, but I wanted a little something special for the door panels. I can't seem to find a species that just jumps out at me so I thought I would ask my fellow woodworkers. I'm kind of leaning toward veneering the panels to get a bookmatched pattern from one door to the other. Let me know what you guys think. And if you know a good place to get the wood/veneer (I already have the solid cherry and ply) pass that info along too please.

Thanks guys. Ya'll are great.

Adam,

The most stunning set of cabinets I have ever seen were made of cherry with quartersawn Sycamore raised panels. The cherry was helped out with some dye or stain into the red spectrum, while the QS Sycamore was finished with what looked like just a clear finish. You could also use flatsawn ash, with the cathedral's as the accent, birds eye maple comes to mind, as does curly maple. Spalted maple looks wonderful with cherry also. Some of the exotics would look nice too. Just depends on how busy you want the panels to be.

I just got some veneer from this guy.

He is in Indiana and I had my stuff in 3 or 4 days. Hope this helps.

I agree with Roger. Here are some projects I've made using spalted maple, spalted sycamore and birdseye maple with cherry. While not cabinet doors, they'll give you an idea of the combinations.

I originally thought about using tiger maple, but I've come to notice that it looks better on a horizontal surface. When the wood is utilized vertically, it seems like the chatoyance isn't the same, and, in my opinion, that's half of what makes the figured maple so beautiful. Seeing that depth is awesome. Has anyone else noticed this?

First- I really like the cabinet design. My thoughts are to use the same species as the rest of the cabinet but use figured stock. Since your cabinet is cherry, use some quilted cherry. It will cost quite a bit more but the final look will knock them ever,

Acorn, NICE pieces. Can you embed an RSS feed, please? I'm horrible at going out to find my blogs to read. I use google reader, so an RSS feed helps me keep up with all the blogs.

I think I have the RSS button now. It always had the RSS feed, via the address line in your browser. I haven't used a feed myself, so I'm not up to speed, but I think its there.
