HTN can easily lead to strokes and renal failure, so along with your doc telling you to eat right and exercise, they give you a drug that suits your condition appropriately. Diet and exercise can only do so much, particularly in the short term, and then it requires the patient to adhere to the regimen, which often doesn't happen. A doctor would be negligent to not offer diet advice in these situations. And most of those skulls only made it to maybe 30 years old. Modern medicine and technology has to deal with the fact that life expectancy has tripled in the last 1000 years, and doubled in the last 150. Our bodies weren't intended to live this long, and things like fluoride, blood pressure medicine, and the knowledge what constitutes a good diet are what have helped us live so long recently. If you eat a healthy, biologically appropriate diet, and you exercise regularly, your rate of illness will decrease drastically. Scientists are figuring out that we can actually turn genes on and off with proper or improper diets. That's not to say that even the healthiest people don't get sick or end up with diseases...but I'm talking averages. Modern doctors don't prioritize diet and exercise...they say yeah yeah you need to eat right and exercise, but in the meantime just take these drugs and you'll be fine. Which gives people no incentive to actually make themselves healthy since they can just take a pill to treat the symptoms instead of addressing the root cause of the illness. I think it's pretty hard to argue that's not the case. It's a systemic problem and very real. I know it's a cliche, but it's true...we have "sick care" in this country, not "health care." And even when doctors do put the correct emphasis on diet, often they're giving bad diet advice that was developed by the agricultural lobby itself back in the 1950s and 60s..."eat lots of grains and stay away from steak and eggs." Wrong. They did drop vegetables to the bottom, but they still have grains and starchy garbage right above it. It's just dead wrong, and it's why people are so sick. Also, "most of those skulls only made it to maybe 30 years old" is also wrong. 30 years old may have been the average lifespan of people 10,000 years ago, but that's only because so many died at birth and in infancy. If a baby made it through childhood, most likely it would live well into its 60s or 70s. That's an established fact. So while yes, the average lifespan may have been shorter because birth and the first couple years were so dubious, people could be and quite often were perfectly healthy into old age. There's a reason the Okinawans are the longest-living people on earth...and it's not because of modern western medicine. They eat diets primarily of leafy green vegetables and fish, and they remain active throughout their lives. Contrast that with Americans, who sit on their asses and eat processed garbage...then dump pharmaceuticals on their chronic illnesses when they inevitably develop them. I'm not totally anti-modern medicine. If I get into a car accident or cut my hot dogs off at the table saw or get cancer...thank god for the doctors and their surgical skill and their magic potions. I'm on it. But generally speaking, the doctor's role in Americans' lives is to treat the illnesses that we have because of poor diets and lack of exercise, not to prevent the illnesses in the first place. I don't blame people for taking drugs when they develop chronic illnesses...often it's too late and they have no choice. I'm just making the point that if you live a clean, healthy life, you're much less likely to develop those chronic illnesses and to need all those drugs.
gee-dub
I am putting on my Johnny Carson 'Carnac the Magnificent' turban. I am looking into the future. I foresee the next great financial crisis. Big Pharma collapses when people finally believe that diet and exercise work!
