Popular Post gee-dub
I've had some minor surgery and so am stuck doing really light stuff for a while. When opportunities like this come along I catch up on all that 'low priority' stuff I always mean to get to someday . . . I'm always looking for space by making things do double duty or making "version 2's" that are better than my initial run at something. A donkey ear is fine but, I wanted something that would tuck under the bench for smaller work. I think I saw something like this in Popular Woodworking but, don't hold me to that. Here's the general idea. It will set in my Lee Valley shooting board track since I already have a board with one being used. Once again the scrap bins earn their keep in supplying me all the material. A piece of 1/2" BB ply, rip to width and use a sled to make it dead square. I make some of the other parts out of 3/4" BB ply. I use a v-groove bit at the router table to cut the notch that allows the plane body to set in a lower position that brings the plane iron into play at "bed" level. A little glue (and a few screws since I didn't feel like waiting) and I give it a whirl on some small scraps of red oak. Here they are end-to-end, the joint is about 1-1/4" to the right of the square's tongue. Here's a view from above. Of course we really intend to use them like this. I just post this stuff in case someone is hemming and hawing about making something like this. It doesn't take long and can be made from scrap, what do I have to lose.
..Kev
There are so many things like this that many just assume that everyone knows or has made. Thanks for taking the time to share!
