MrMayor
Should I use plastic 3/4 x 3/8 UHMW bars or aluminum ones for the bottom of the sled I want to make? Also, should I use 1/2 or 3/4 inch smooth plywood for the base? Thanks
gee-dub
I use 3/4" BB ply for the base and have run UHMW, aluminum and quarter-sawn wood runners with success. All have been in use for many years.
wtnhighlander
I like wooden runners just because I have plenty of wood. I also use 1/2 ply for the base to maximize cut depth and limit sled weight. But it all does the job.
Coop
Good idea on the 1/2” vs 3/4”. I made my cross cut sled a few years back from 3/4” when weight wasn’t a consideration.
wtnhighlander
3/4" is probably a necessity if you want to include T-track in the sled floor for hold downs.
MrMayor
Excellent point! At first I was thinking 1/2 inch for the weight factor but you made me realize that I do want to add some T-track which requires a 3/8 inch depth. Glad I asked before I bought the plywood. Thanks.
