Popular Post curlyoak
Other than the 8/4 cherry bread board ends, the rest is made from 4/4. The legs are laminated. The double up of 4/4 is from the same board which creates a matched grain edge. Above all joints going into the legs is double dominoes. Dominoes for the bread board ends. I don't make a draw board joint. I am left handed and rebellious. I question and challenge most everything. I waited a long time for my first bread board end joint to explode. Never happened. So for years I made the joint my way. Then a few years ago I contacted Franklin glue. The maker of titebond. I spoke to an engineer there. He told me that titebond would never qualify for trusses and engineered beams. Because the glue creeps. That was the word he used. But he said that creeping was a woodworkers friend as we all know wood moves. Now sitting at my old flat oak desk top with bb ends. At this moment the end is a 32nd or less passed the the edge. That changes with the seasons. Just like a draw board joint. Don't try this with juvenile wood or not fully air dried wood. I have made more fully glued bread board joints than I can count. And for many years. Still good. I am ready to finish the table but the weather is unfavorable. Lots of rain expected for several days. But I can't complain. We need the rain. It has been dry for a couple of months. The cherry wood I am using is special. I was at a lunch counter about 5 years ago and a guy tapped me on my shoulder and he thought for some reason I was a woodworker. He told me that his father got a project to clean out a warehouse. Mostly trash. He got paid by keeping anything he wants including 200' of 4/4 cherry. Almost no sap wood. Many wide boards. A bunch at 16". 8' to 16' $5 bf. It was priced a little below market at the time. But the quality was special. I have heard many stories about good wood opportunities, but never me. This was my turn.
