Popular Post gee-dub
I get asked about these now and again and apparently never posted a build on these. They were made in the garage while I was between shops. Dimensions are nominal. When I make these sorts of things I make a batch (should have made more). I use a strip of old gift card to make a consistent space to allow free sliding movement. Tilt the drill press and drill the peg hole with a Forstner. I drill an 1/8" shy of the back and use glue and a screw to hold the peg. The peg passes through most of two layers of 3/4" ply so the screw is just a retainer, not a strength fastener. As you can see I make these out of any properly sized plywood scrap I happen to have around. Here is one on a cleat. Just demonstrating the sliding feature. Despite making more than I thought I would ever need . . . It turns out I need some more. These have to be slid all the way to the end of the cleat to remove them. I chose this method rather than making them removable-in-place and using some sort of retaining pin like I do on more task specific cleat fixtures. I keep a couple of unused cleats on each rail for flexible use. There are a couple of places where I have heavy objects hanging from the fixtures near the end of the cleat. I put a small washer at the end of the cleat as an emergency stop. Probably unnecessary but I am a belt-and-suspenders kinda guy. I'm not a pessimist. I just live where the ground tends to do the Watusi on a monthly basis
BillyJack
Nice job, but what will you do when you run out of shop?
legenddc
Thank you for posting this! I just counted and realized I have 6 sleds/fences to hang plus an Incra Miter Express to deal with. I've already printed the image and will have to see if my dad wants any as well since I'm going to have to go use his drill press.
Popular Post gee-dub
I keep a white board in the shop. I jot down things I would like to get done given the time. More cleat wall pegs have been up there for a while. I am between finish coats on the current project so now is a good time. Despite making more of these than I could ever use . . . I needed some more. I had saved some drawer box material from a bathroom remodel project. This is what is left after cutting the 3 parts to each peg assembly is done. I use glue and hardened screws for the cleat attachment. I just use drywall screws for the lower block as it take little to no stress. The hole for the 3/4" peg as at 6 degrees and stops about 1/4" shy of exiting the back. I use a small retaining screw for the dowel. The "peg in a hole" does the work. The retaining screw just makes sure the peg doesn't fall out. A dab of glue would work as well. Now I need to scrounge around and see if I have a piece of wall cleat laying around somewhere. I just need a couple of pieces about 3' long.
BillyJack
Looking good, but wouldn’t it be easier to use peg board? Its given me an idea to see if I have some narrow pegboard for some hangers..

The pegs are used for things weighing more than I want hanging from even 1/4" pegboard.
BillyJack
Peg board hooks can handle a lot of weight.. Dont get me wrong, I’ve just seen a lot of woodworkers burn thru shop space only to later say they don’t have any room. Ive got roughly 600 sq ft and I’m struggling to figure out how to get more without eliminating extra tools, etc to make space.
