Popular Post Hammer5573
I learned this technique watching David Boeff’s YouTube channel. It’s a method to install legs on a pedestal using sliding dovetails. Some of you may already be familiar with this process. It begins by laying out the location of each leg on the pedestal ( 120 degrees apart). I use the compass on my lathe to do this. Next I outline the base of the pedestal on a thick piece of poster board and cut it out. The piece of cutout poster board is attached to the base of the pedestal using double-sided tape. Next, I place the pedestal into a jig using deck screws inserted into the center holes on each end of the pedestal. The jig has guide rails on top for the router with a stop block to limit the length of cut. I initially use a 1/2” spiral bit to hog out the dove tail slot. I then replace the spiral bit with a 3/4” dovetail bit and repeat the process. After completing this step I remove the cutout poster board from the bottom of the pedestal and use it to outline the dovetail margins on the top of the leg. Once the margins of the dovetail is traced onto each side of the leg, I attach the leg to a simple jig that keeps it stable while I cutout the dovetail waste on a bandsaw. When doing this I am careful to “leave the pencil line”. This process is simpler than you would think. if the process is done correctly, the leg should slide into the dovetail slot without difficulty.

Mark J
Curious. Do you cut all the mortises first and then the tenons, or mortise tenon, mortise tenon, mortice tenon?
