Going with hand tools

I did it. Today I finally decided not to buy more power tools but instead ordered three hand planes from Lie-Nielson - block plane, low angle jack plane and a smother plane. and I ordered some Norton water stones.

My reasons are that:

  • I hate the noise of power tools
  • I am working on smaller pieces these days that are scary to run through a power tool
  • There is just something soul satisfying about shaping wood by hand

and I know the Lie-Nielson tools are on the higher end of the price scale but hope that I am not going to have to spend a lot of time tuning the tools up before I have to use them (trading dollars for time).

A wise investment, Andrew, a higher price but well worth it. Two reasons good tools cost so much more are the quality of the materials and the extra attention to detail.
