R Jones
Commemorative Chest commissioned for a retiring Navy Master Sergent with 30 years service. It was constructed from Alder and stained to match existing decor. The outside was a Java General Finishes Gel Stain coated with a precat satin lacquer. The inside, just a clear water based ML Campbell Satin lacquer. Both the box and tray feature dovetail joints. The tray and lid feature a matching blue velvet. The only thing I can’t take credit for is the layout and placement of the medals and ribbons for the display in the lid.

R Jones
Duckkisser, Yes, bought the model and carved it in there just prior to assembly. Originally they wanted some phrase engraved but I thought with the dark stain it would just get lost.... so the larger carving worked out much better:) It's also great because everyone is drawn to it and not my mistakes, LOL
JayWC
Master sergeant is either Air Force or Marines. I think you mean Master Chief... Having said that...that's a great looking chest. Nice tribute. Also, please tell her "Fair winds and following seas" from an anonymous former Navy Seabee. That's the traditional "Best wishes" in the Navy for a retiring member. I am also copying and pasting a poem traditionally read at a retirement ceremony...there is never a dry eye in the house after this is done. For twenty years This sailor has stood the watch While some of us were in our bunks at night This sailor stood the watch While some of us were in school learning our trade This shipmate stood the watch Yes.. even before some of us were born into this world This shipmate stood the watch In those years when the storm clouds of war were seen brewing on the horizon of history This shipmate stood the watch Many times she would cast an eye ashore and see her family standing there Needing her guidance and help Needing that hand to hold during those hard times But she still stood the watch She stood the watch for twenty years She stood the watch so that we, our families and Our fellow countrymen could sleep soundly in safety, Each and every night Knowing that a sailor stood the watch Today we are here to say 'Shipmate... the watch stands relieved Relieved by those You have trained ,Guided, and Lead Shipmate you stand relieved.. we have the watch..." "Boatswain..Standby to pipe the side...Shipmate's going Ashore.."

Dynablue
The chest looks very nice but I do wonder why the Ol' Master Chief chose to replace the engraved phrase with the crest of a Naval Officer. As a retired Chief that sure wouldn't have been what I picked for the front
