As it began, I had just moved into a new house, and my one car garage was(and still is) in shambles, all of my tools are scattered across the floor and piled on any flat surface. On top of that I have one outlet, which tested my patience at times. Any ways, the woods I chose for this cradle were african mahogany with a lot of ribbon slice, curly maple for the raised panels, and 8/4 hard maple for the legs. The cradle itself features 28 mortise and tenon joints. The mortises were hogged out with a forstner bit on the drill press, and cleaned up chisel style. The tenons were cut oversized on the bandsaw and later walked in to proper size by hand. The raised panels were veneered with mahogany and cut on the table saw. The panels were pre finished before assembly and inserted into the grooves with spaceballs to allow for expansion and contraction. Curves cut on the bandsaw then rasped for a smooth even surface to run your hands over. Stained with english chestnut, and sprayed with dull rub effect cab acryllic laquer(dont worry, it had plenty of time to cure and gas off). The maple legs and feet were joined with dowels. They were cut to rough shape, smoothed out with a rasp, they rounded over with a 3/4 roundover bit, then some extensive sanding. The stretcher is held with screws so that the cradle can be disassembled into 4 pieces without headache. Oh yeah, and the cradle is attached with pivot hinges so it rocks smoothly and quietly. I was shocked at how sturdy it is, it is incredibly strong, it can support a giant baby and I'd bet a dollar on that =) 3 Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Whimsical and sensual at the same time, the legs are so delightful that, to me, they steal the thunder of all the wonderful mahogany joinery you did for the carriage. Again, though, lovely piece.
