Hasselback
I'm planning on building wooden toys for my son, and want to see if you could offer an advice on finishing. I plan on painting the toys with a mix of spray cans and brushed acrylics. What would you suggest to use as a final clear-coat? I would like something that would last under rough play and also be safe to be stuck in a mouth from time to time. Any input is greatly appreciated. G. duckkisser
why not just leave it painted any kid is going to dent/scrape/chew ect......just make it durable and any finish you put on it will end up geting dirty and smudged frequently because hey lets face it kids are dirty. mikem
Durable finish is important, but even more important is the toxicity of the paint on the kids toy, as even the most durable finish is likely going to be highly abused. Your best bet would be to look for food safe finishes. The link that Beechwood Chip posted is a great discussion on this.

Beechwood Chip
Thanks, Ace, that was the thread I was looking for. Or, at least the latest version of it.
HoboMonk
Make stain using Rit dye and top coat it with shellac. Rog Rit dye isn't colorfast. We put that frequent Interest Echo to rest by testing in our craft guild in the laboratory. Also, it is not considered food safe on wood. dwacker
Rit actually works fine. Is as color fast as transfast. I dyed this ugly little turning nearly 25 years ago, top coat is lacquer. It hasnt changed except for the dust and dings. Don
