Nathan Forsythe
This wood came off a pallet. I like the streaks through it but am interested to find out what kind of wood it is. Any ideas?
wtnhighlander
Looks a bit like walnut, more sapwood than heartwood.

duckkisser
Ditto used similar looking walnut to make a few boxes in my class room. They make pallets out every kind of wood just usually out of pine, Cotton wood etc.....
T-astragal
Looks like what I get these days when I buy FAS walnut, except there too much heartwood. Oh and the boards are too wide. Lol
wdwerker
Plane a section and a clean crosscut so we can really see the end grain would really help. Poplar is a possibility. Dozens of species that are usually not sold for woodworking can end up as pallets.
Rick A McQuay
Kinda reminds me of mulberry but the heartwood looks similar to walnut. Knowing the origin of the pallet would tell a lot.
Guest
Walnut has a distinct smell when cut or sanded. Can't really describe it, but if you have some walnut on hand compare the smell.

Barry Richardson
Walnut has a very distinctive chambered pith too, see if you can check that out....
Eric.
It's walnut, no need to smell it. It was cut from a young tree...that's why there's so much sapwood in it.
