RPCV_Woodworker
Hey All, So there is a shade structure that was torn down at my work. I was using some of the scrap, and saw that some pieced have great grain and color. It smells strongly of spices, primarily cinnamon, when sawn. Anyone have an idea what I've got? I'm based in Senegal, West Africa, for geographical reference...

wtnhighlander
Hobbit house says several tree species from which cinnamon is harvested do grow in that region of Africa. Its a large list of species, though. I didn't realize cinnamon came in so many varieties.

RPCV_Woodworker
Probably not cinnamon, I worked all over this country from 2009-2012 and never heard tale of any growing this far north. I guess it's just the domestic African Mahogany...
TheFatBaron
It could also be cumaru, though it's native to central/south America.

My wood name database lists over 20 cinnamon species (genus Cinnamomum)
