I am going to build a cradle for my upcoming great grandchild. I was thinking of using walnut but I am finding it hard finding 10/4 walnut for the stand and don't want to glue up two pieces. My question is what other wood would be a good choice for building a cradle and what wood would be good to build that I can use a walnut dye?

Hey Triple. I used flame birch for the main part of the cradle I built. http://www.tumblewoo...in%27s%20Cradle As far as stain, I don't know. I'm not a fan of stains, so don't have any experience there. Congrats on the upcoming grand baby!

I am another fan of birch; built my crib out of it (well, not MINE, but one for my daughter :-). Used stains and finish made by Crystalac.

I didn't use a pre-stain sealer (birch does tend to be a little blotchy); mostly cause I was going for a bit of a "rustic" appearance. But, the solid wood didn't blotch at all. I do wish that I had sealed the ply on the ends (Pure-Bond Plywood made with soy glue; no formaldehyde)... That did blotch a little, but still looks nice...

As far as other woods, I would say really any hardwood that does not have a high oil content or strong aromatics... This can be a possible issue with allergies / respiratory sensitivity...

Hope this helps!

What a great cradle. Great choice of woods. WOW! My cradle will be my first furniture build and after seeing all the cradles shown I can only hope my build will turn out half as good.
