Clint Brickl
I will soon have the opportunity to take a black walnut log to a sawyer and have it milled into lumber. I am wondering what thickness to have it milled to. 4/4? 5/4? I was thinking about having all milled into 4/4 because I don't have any specific project in mind for it. Then again I could have it milled into thicker pieces and resaw it later. Any thoughts?
Vic
I'd go at least 8/4 for the majority of the log. You'll have to wait longer for it to reach equilibrium, but doing an initial sizing to 4/4 wont yield a very thick finished board, especially if there is much movement. Be sure to get everything stickered and covered.
Guest Trace
Walnut, after cutting into 5/4 takes a loooong time to dry properly. Put it up in the garage rafters and forget about it for a couple of years. By that time, it will be ready, and very stable.
cody.sheridan-2008
You could alway just get it slabed and straighten it up on the table or band saw later, this is what I do at school (and soon at home when I get around to building my own mill!). I think for furnature it is always best to get it kiln dried. Cheers
muddlermike
definately, at least 8/4 (and even some 12/4 for potential table legs or such). be sure to sticker it properly. I wouldn't go the kiln dried route, the color will be much more impressive if you air dry it for a year or two.
