Stephen Prunier
I just added the Norton 1000 to go with my 4000/8000 combo waterstones. Until now I just soaked the 4000/8000 for 10 minutes before using. I know that the 1000 calls for the same. My question is, do any of you keep your waterstones submerged in water 24/7 and just grab them as needed? Thanks
Trip
I keep my waterstones submerged if I'm going to use them in the afternoon or the next morning. Some stones you can keep permanently submerged -- you just add a few ml of bleach. However, many stones you can not... Not sure about Norton... You may want to check with them... avalonwoods
Hi Stephen, I've been soaking my waterstones in water 24/7 for about 5 years now and have never had a problem with that. I have them in a rubbermaid container with a good sealing lid on it. I used distilled water and change it every couple of months to keep things fresh. S. ChrisG
When I was using a notron 1k/8k combo stone I kept it submerged in water full-time. There are indeed some stones that you should not perma-soak but I never had any problems with 24/7 submersion of the nortons
CessnaPilotBarry
All of my stones that require soaking live in a 1/2 gallon plastic thingie with a snap-on lid. It's a Tupperware or Rubbermaid clone, purchased at the grocery store for a few bucks. The stones sit on end. I have chlorinated water. If you don't, a drop or two of bleach will keep it cleaner. JMort847
I use a Tupperware lettuce keeper, with a plastic grate on the bottom that hold the waterstones off the bleach-enhanced water.
duncumb.fc
My stones, as well as everyone else's in the workshop are soaking 24/7. We use tap water in a big open tray. Unfortunately, we *always* forget to change the water, so we get algae after a week or two, but a quick changeover and this is no problem. Personally, I love being able to grab them... And if you're more diligent than us about changing your water then you're set to go! Bleach is probably a good idea though Fraser
wm_crash
I use mosting soaking stones. I soak them when I need them. I let them dry at least 24 hours before boxing them up. cheers, wm_crash, the friendly hooligan
Trip
Again, just want to remind folks that not all stones are the same... Some you can store full-time underwater and some you can't. I've been told that the stone's binders determine storage. If in doubt, check...
