wdkits1
Hi everyone Been quite some time since I’ve had any new work to post. Been real busy with repair work mostly. But here are a few photos of my latest commissioned project. These custom keepsake boxes are made from Brazilian Cherry( Jatoba) and measure 6” x 8” x 4”. The Intarsia for each box lid is comprised of 36 pieces from 11 different woods. Box is finished with 4 coats of wipe-on satin poly and the Intarsia is finished with 3 coats of spray-on satin poly. Woods used—Background—lacewood, rope-maple, sky-tulipwood, sun- yellowheart, distant hills-cocobolo, water- blue mahoe, rocks- spalted beech, tree – palo santos, tree trunk- fishtail oak, gulls and shoreline- holly, weeds- lignum vitae. TRBaker
Awesome! Love the attention to detail! It's actually not all that accurate of detail. The last time I drove by the Lone Cypress, the gulls were on the left. +1 Awesome.
lonestarwood
That is really slick! I have always been intrigued with intarsia, but cannot wrap my mind around actually doing it. Very nice.
jHop
How do you do those gulls? this is way past cool, by the way.
wdkits1
Thanks All for the comments To jHop--The gulls are inlayed into the background water by first drilling a pilot hole in the water, cutting out the hole for the gulls then using the hole that was cut out to get the exact outline of the gull and using a #3/0 skip tooth blade( basically a thread with teeth) cutting the gulls to fit. Perfect fit every time.
Byrdie
Very nice! I particularly like the pattern in the grain of the "background" wood on the top.
woodieboy
I am totally impressed with your intarsia! I wish I could have a good scroll saw and I'll make one something like that.
Popular Post wdkits1
To Woodie boy-- I use an older Craftsman scrollsaw( 1996) . The saw does not matter as much as having patience and lots and lots of practice. Anyone want to see my next project done as a work in progress thread?
