Daniel Kuehl
I volunteered to make our table decorations for our wedding party earlier in the summer. I figured I had plenty of time (or so I told myself). I made 16 lamps....each were one-of-a-kind.....and each had to blend 2 different kinds of wood. I also found that I wasn't satisfied with using power tools to cut the joinery on these much smaller pieces of wood. I used the table saw to cut to size, then went to the handsaws and chisels for the joints. It sounded simple enough, but it took me way longer to complete than I thought it would. 192 half-laps, 102 tiny mortises, and 102 tiny tenons was the final count! I used walnut, maple, tiger-maple, spalted hard maple, red oak, and QS white oak. Finish used was Watco's Danish oil for everything. After the finish cured I needed to make the tiny little lampshades. These were all made from vellum paper and each was embossed with a watermark stamp. My sister's pretty deep into the whole stamping thing, so I had her teach me how to do it. Here's a few pics of the lamps: Here's a closer view of the watermark: This is the effect when the room was darkened: All of the lamps are being given to Grandmas and Grandpas, Aunts, Uncles, and Sisters...sort of a thank-you gift for coming out to celebrate with us.
