bushwacked
Nice collection of clamps as well Eric! What sweet witch magic is that drill press? It looks really hightech haha. Kev that would be great to see a pic during bandsaw work too if you get a chance
bushwacked
Yes.. Before I had the drum sander, I used a domino to keep things aligned. A biscuit jointer would work as well.. Just saw this. I am kinda confused... What did they keep aligned? Each and every piece? Or once you glued up and then cut the board in half'ish to input a design in? Just confused on how this ties into not having a drum sander ...
wouldwurker
That drill press looks pretty awesome...never saw one with a digital readout before

By keeping the pieces aligned during glue up, you cut down on the amount of sanding to be done. With the drum sander, I'm not nearly as worried about the sanding as I was when all I had was the RO sander. That drill press looks pretty awesome...never saw one with a digital readout before Looks like one of the newer PMs to me..

Eric.
It's a PM 1800. It looks cooler than it actually is. I'm happy enough with it, but never really fell in love.
Freddie
2800. If you had the 1800, you'd definitely be in love sir.
..Kev
There was a few questions about the process so, here's what I do to make these.. Starting with a board glued up and ready to go. Create thin strips of wood you wish to use for the stripe. I created a layout jig that I use but, just about any large sweeping curves will work well. Cut the piece - I get a clean enough cut to go to glue up but, you could use the template to flush trim. Glue it all up.. More clamps the better.. Once out of clamps, trim to size, round corners, sand, finish, etc...
bushwacked
Thanks for the great walk through!! This looks like another great board! So now that we've covered that. I've read a lot on how to actually finish the boards since food will be on them. I have read long arguments on how to finish from both sides. Chemicals vs natural. Just curious how you finish yours? bushwacked
Any new updates on boards in the making? These seem pretty limitless on the designs. If you can think it and have the patience for glue to dry. It seems like you could make some pretty sweet stuff.
..Kev
Well, unfortunately, I didn't grab any finished shots of the ones I was making. They're all wrapped up for Christmas.. Sorry about that. Yes.. As many times as you want to cut and glue up again.. You can do pretty much what ever you'd like.

..Kev
I'm sure I'll make some more at some point.. Will probably go ahead and do one completely in end train.
pghmyn
The curved stripe through a cutting board is something that I am going to have to try some day. Really professional looking.

bushwacked
Ok. Was thinking about this. Since they are not end grain does the salad bowl finish help with blocking things that would soak in?
