Cochese
I had the problem a bit ago. I figured it was due to the forum being down.

thewoodwhisperer
i have no idea what you guys are talking about, lol. The forum is alive and well. What do you mean by "Comcast can't find"?
Tpt life
Might be an iOS issue here locally. 3g is excruciatingly slow so the pic thing may need to wait since I attempted to trace route on my phone. This is posting through a PC borrowed from work so the issue is clearly not Comcast. On the phone I am getting a "Safari cannot open the page because the server cannot be found." The cell network is loading the forum, just very slowly. The phone is loading other pages normally through Comcast and 3g so I questioned the forum before posting (thanks Kev.) I will dump my phone cache and do all the maintenance and report back if the situation changes. Full disclosure, it is WIFI over cable internet. Cable seems to have the most hardware failure/replacement of any signal transmission I have ever used. This could be a temporary ISP issue. Tpt life
Seems to be over now. Two hours of slight inconvenience. I will wait a little longer before posting if this creeps up again.
Trip
Marc, in case you didn't know -- WTO has been periodically unavailable over the past week or so... I'm on Verizon... 'Cannot find' is usually a DNS problem... I simply receive periodic time-outs... This started to happen around the time dynamic adverts were implemented... thewoodwhisperer
As soon as we have persistent or consistent issues that are reproducible, we can look into it. Issues affecting only one or two users, while important to know about, aren't enough for us to delve into. Just too much potential for issues on the user's end that are outside of our control. But again, if anyone is having issues feel free to drop a note here in the Help forum.
Tom Cancelleri
I've had numerous issues connecting today via FIOS, Comcast and through my phone provider. About 20 minutes ago I was unable to get to either site. Here is the traceroute, it would seem the problem is happening at the host end on Rackspace. I just finished a migration of some of my job's sites from Rackspaec to Amazon Web Services and some of my job's web servers. Rackspace is a headache if you ask me. $ traceroute woodtalkonline.com traceroute to woodtalkonline.com (108.166.27.245), 64 hops max, 52 byte packets 1 wireless_broadband_router.home (192.168.1.1) 1.479 ms 0.825 ms 0.780 ms 2 l100.clppva-vfttp-11.verizon-gni.net (98.118.244.1) 7.494 ms 6.873 ms 7.236 ms 3 g0-1-0-4.clppva-lcr-22.verizon-gni.net (130.81.223.62) 10.373 ms 10.008 ms 7.509 ms 4 130.81.162.4 (130.81.162.4) 9.381 ms 130.81.162.2 (130.81.162.2) 15.488 ms 10.668 ms 5 0.so-6-0-2.xl4.iad8.alter.net (152.63.0.130) 48.221 ms 9.821 ms 9.961 ms 6 tengige0-5-1-0.gw1.iad8.alter.net (152.63.38.250) 12.188 ms tengige0-5-0-0.gw1.iad8.alter.net (152.63.33.253) 14.347 ms tengige0-5-1-0.gw1.iad8.alter.net (152.63.38.250) 11.283 ms 7 teliasonera-gw.customer.alter.net (152.179.50.234) 19.688 ms 32.337 ms 24.367 ms 8 ash-bb3-link.telia.net (62.115.134.47) 27.385 ms ash-bb3-link.telia.net (213.155.133.220) 22.559 ms ash-bb4-link.telia.net (213.155.133.232) 15.213 ms 9 nyk-bb2-link.telia.net (62.115.138.28) 19.364 ms nyk-bb2-link.telia.net (62.115.136.200) 21.746 ms nyk-bb1-link.telia.net (213.155.130.76) 19.441 ms 10 chi-b21-link.telia.net (213.155.131.243) 38.590 ms chi-b21-link.telia.net (213.155.131.241) 39.318 ms chi-b21-link.telia.net (80.91.246.18) 33.330 ms 11 rackspace-ic-134354-chi-b21.c.telia.net (80.239.160.50) 36.161 ms 37.215 ms 34.152 ms 12 * * * 13 czi1-tunnel4.ord1.rackspace.net (50.56.6.163) 41.045 ms 39.529 ms 37.218 ms 14 core2-corea.ord1.rackspace.net (184.106.126.127) 40.285 ms core2-coreb.ord1.rackspace.net (184.106.126.131) 32.252 ms core1-corea.ord1.rackspace.net (184.106.126.125) 44.012 ms 15 aggr101a-2-core2.ord1.rackspace.net (23.253.15.27) 39.641 ms aggr101a-2-core1.ord1.rackspace.net (184.106.126.13) 39.751 ms 44.317 ms 16 * * * 17 * * * 18 * * * 19 * * * 20 * *
thewoodwhisperer
The problem was definitely at the host end because the server was down. We have some issues on the TWW site that occasionally cause a build up of open connections that timeout. When it hits a peak, the server crashes. That's what happened today and that's why you had trouble connecting this evening. The server was down for about an hour as it was completely out of memory. We'll be releasing a new version of the site very soon that should help alleviate the stress on the server. The forum going down is just the unfortunate side effect of living on the same server as the much busier TWW site. As for Rackspace, from my personal experience, I couldn't disagree more. Rackspace has provided us with top-notch service from day 1. But again, that's just my personal experience with them.
Tom Cancelleri
Marc, Are you managing the LAMP stack on your own at an OS level, or utilizing a CPANEL type interface. If you're having issues with connection timeouts and too many httpd/apache processes causing memory issues it might be a good idea to have your apache conf files tweaked to lower the connection timeout, or max connections lowered to match the available amount of RAM on the server. A better solution would be to use a caching mechanism such as Varnish to speed up and serve frequently visited dynamic content. Sorry if I'm out of place in making these suggestions. LAMP stack web server admin is what I do for a living.
wtnhighlander
I believe Marc prefers his Varnish thinned, and simply wiped on.
dwacker
I have issues a few times a week. Last night couldn't find site for a couple hours. thewoodwhisperer
One of the best things you guys could do for me is to use this website before posting technical issues in the help section of the forum. Simply input the forum's URL into that website and you'll have a quick idea of whether the problem lies with your system/connection or if there's a legitimate problem with the forum.
Tom Cancelleri
I check from 3 different networks. VPN tunnel, my home connection and my wireless cell provider. 3 devices, all different network backbones. I'll add that site to the list.
