wdwerker
One coat is plenty of BLO in your use. I wouldn't sand until you have a couple of wiped varnish coats or very lightly if brushing. Be extremely careful around edges and corners when sanding. It is so easy to sand thru the finish or veneer and a nightmare to touch up or repair. stevenelkins
Sorry for the stupid question, but when you say "varnish" that goes for polyurethane, too, yes?

stevenelkins
Thanks so much for everybody's help! Here's another question.... I was planning on using Minwax Stainable Wood Filler to fix a few small gouges on the table legs. Will that material absorb the boiled linseed oil in the same way the walnut will and give me a good match? Or will it have to be tweaked some way... an, if so - how? wdwerker
No it won't absorb the oil the same way , it will usually change to a unappealing color. I have mixed colors of filler to get a shade I need. Testing on the underside of your table might be a good idea.
stevenelkins
Then I assume you mix filler colors to match the walnut AFTER the walnut has absorbed the BLO - is that correct, Steve?
wdwerker
Yep, it can take trial an error to get it right.
Eric.
I'd rather have gouges in my table than wood filler...but that's me.
stevenelkins
Gouges = Personality ?
Popular Post Eric.
Yeah basically. Just like I'd rather be bald than wear a toupée. Neither is ideal but at least with baldness you just look terrible naturally instead of looking like a phony baloney insecure douche. Wood filler is the toupée of woodworking. I'm on my way so I can say these things.
Gary
... Wood filler is the toupée of woodworking. OMG, this is going to be my new signature.
