osgw380
I have a display case with a door on the front as pictured. Door is 3/4'' thick and 3/4'' wide. The sides are the same. The one pictured I built earlier and put barrel hinges in it. Installation was difficult and they feel weak to more. I am building a couple more and wondered if anyone had any recommendations on a better hinge application. I was looking at euro hinge but it looks like they won't work. I was also looking at soss hinges and they might be an option. The doors are inset and open out. Thanks Allen
Eric.
Nothing is more elegant than high quality, brass knife hinges. Look at Brusso. They're not "easy" to install but if you're methodical about it they're not rocket science either. Marc has at least one video, possibly several, of him installing knife hinges. They take care and precision to install but they take your piece to the next level. It's worth it.
Immortan D
Offset brass hinges will look good too.
Immortan D
This is one of the cabinets here at the work place: Obviously whoever built this wasn't paying attention to details, but you'll get the idea.
Eric.
Knife hinge install I did on a little cabinet a few years ago...
osgw380
Thanks for the recommendations. I had looked a knife hinges and really like the look of them just didn't like the price. Guess need to suck it up and go that route these pieces are going to be for sale when finished so I need them to look nice. With the inset door I'm guessing the L shaped are the ones I need? And do you see any issue with the sides of the doors running up at 5 degrees?
Eric.
Yes, offset knife hinges for inset doors. And do you see any issue with the sides of the doors running up at 5 degrees? Huh?
osgw380
Yes, offset knife hinges for inset doors. Huh? In the third picture you can see it. The doors are not square the sides angle out at 5 degrees. The top and bottom are parallel so I think the hinges will work no problem. Coop
Which third pic?
osgw380
Which third pic? My initial post has 3 pictures attached showing a previous piece I used barrel hinges on and I'm building another piece very similar to it.
wtnhighlander
So the cabinet is actually wider at the top? I assumed that was just distortion from the camera angle. Those knife hinges should still work, I think.
wdwerker
I would build a quick mock up of the door and frame then test the offset knife hinge location. I bet the top hinge will need to be vertically directly above the bottom hinge. If not the door will rise as it opens and possibly slam on its own, either farther open or back closed. If the door tapers and the hinges are aligned vertically then the wider top past the hinge will swing in. There is a good bit of play in the small barrel hinges which let them work with the tapered door. Knife hinges are fairly snug but operate smoothly.
Eric.
Yeah, what Steve said. Knife hinges have to be installed in perfect plane with one another or they don't work right. I didn't realize your cabinet was a trapezoid...scratch my suggestion.
wtnhighlander
Yeah, Steve and Eric are right. I realized we have some gates at work, which use a tapered side frame to form a self-closing mechanism. Your frame, tapering outward at the top, will tend to self open. osgw380
Thanks guys I went ahead and got some more barrel hinges since I know they will work. I might try soss hinges another time but price won out this time. Thanks Allen
