Lee Bussy
I received my L-N block plane yesterday. It's pretty for sure, but the last time I used a plane was in High School shop. So .. .what's first? Do I sharpen the iron? Do I figure out all the knobs and levers (I guess if you spend this much on a plane they figure you know what you are doing?) I'm sort of learning this part by "correspondence course" so anything pointing me in the right direction to learn about/how to use this properly is appreciated. ..Kev
It's sharp enough right out of the box to go learn how to use it.
Lee Bussy
It's sharp enough right out of the box to go learn how to use it. Okay ... so ... dials and levers? I have some white pine that will probably let me get a feel for it without beating up the edge too much.
Tpt life
Which plane? Rabbeting block has a wheel under the cap that tensions the cap. It has a wheel out the heel that advances the blade. Will have to check their site to see which plane has a lever. Ok, lever must mean you have an adjustable mouth. This is loosened and tightened by turning the knob. Edited August 26, 2015 by C Shaffer
Lee Bussy
The 60-1/2 Low-Angle Bench plane.
Tpt life
Then all I said should be true. Loosen the knob and open the mouth. Loosen the cap slightly to advance the blade. Re-snug the cap. Test it on some small scrap. Set the mouth based on the depth of cut etc.
Lee Bussy
Oka, I can manage that. What's the wheel underneath?
Tpt life
Does this answer it? Shot this quick before you said which plane. Edited August 26, 2015 by C Shaffer
Trip
Here's the LN video -- it's oriented to the large format block planes, but much of it is transferable: I did a quick youtube search on block plane setup and got several hundred hits... I refined it to Lie-Nielsen Low Angle Block Plane Setup and still got several hundred hits... Like much of youtube, 90% will be junk -- but I bet there's a few videos that'll answer your questions...
4square
Have you cleaned the packing oil off the plane yet? If not, you need to take it apart and wipe each piece down with a solvent before using it. Then a couple of swipes of paraffin wax on the sole will make the plane glide easier over the wood. Lee Bussy
Thanks for the vids - I watched those last night but ran out of time before my bedtime. I have not cleaned the packing oil off yet - I will do that. What about tallow for the sole? I thought I read somewhere that this was good stuff? I actually have a ton of it (okay maybe not a ton) because I make my own shave soaps.
Gilgaron
Tallow is awesome for plane soles and saw plates!
Trip
Found this video on FWW's free site:http://www.finewoodworking.com/tool-guide/video/what-can-a-good-block-plane-do-for-you.aspx Not too much on setup, but worth a look for those new to block planes... Lee Bussy
Thanks hhh. My last work with planes was i High School and there we were admonished to not touch the settings ... so I would not say that was good experience. I've unfortunately worked > 80 hours in the last week so no shop time, but soon.
