AndrewM
Hey all, I have an old Stanley #3 plane and the lateral adjustment lever is extremely loose. It move side to side just by lightly shaking the plane. It is also moves vertically (not supposed to do that). I have read that the rivet that holds it in place may be loose, but I cant really find any examples/videos/pictures of how to fix this. Anyone have any suggestions? Immortan D
There's some info here; http://www.sawmillcreek.org/showthread.php?140269-lateral-adjustment-rivet
Tom King
My best lateral adjuster is a 4 oz. ball peen hammer that is always laying out within easy reach. For me, the one on the plane is for coarse adjustments anyway, and I can easily do without it.
Gilgaron
I have a few planes with broken adjusters and agree with Tom: while nice to have a little tap with a hammer works better anyway. If you don't want to hit the blade with steel, there's a cheapo brass mallet on Amazon made by Shop Fox that works well.
Tpt life
Two thoughts: If the adjuster wiggles, peen the rivet. (Slop there would bug me too.) If the iron won’t stay set, learn to adjust the lever cap.
