TDYER
I am desperate for your advice! This is my 2nd GF Java Gel Stain project. The first was an end table and it turned out wonderful. I used the stain more as a paint so didn't wipe off. This time- maybe because of the larger surface - i am having issues with streak marks. After 3 coats, i had a few streaks so added a 4th and still streaks. I need advice please! Should i put a topcoat on and then another coat of gel stain? Or should i sand? My plan was to gel stain the top and paint the legs with GF milk paint
wtnhighlander
How was the surface prepared before you applied the stain? To me, the photos look as if there is an underlying finish that was not sanded evenly.
Coop
I agree. Not familiar with that particular finish but the streaks were probably started with unfinished sanding prior to the finish. I would probably sand back to bare wood and work your way thru the sanding grits. Or, it’s possible that you over brushed the initial coat which left the streaks? Nice piece! drzaius
Every time I've applied a top coat over a heavy application of stain the results have been very sub-optimal. Issues with adhesion mainly, but also the surface was not uniform. I can offer no help, because I've been in the same boat & have not found a solution. Maybe a coat of shellac over the stain. Actually, I solved the problem by not using stain whenever possible. If I do need to color the wood, I use dyes.
