arabellageorge
I need to determine what type of chair. I've been attracted to solid wood sleeping chairs, no upholstery, caning, etc. This type of chair also fits into my skill set, shop equipment and lumber stock. I want the design to be fairly straight forward but have the option to get more intricate if the prototype works out. Finally, I don't plan to build a plywood prototype, I'll build it with quality lumber understanding I may need to adapt on the fly.
wtnhighlander
Are you asking for suggestions? Are you more interested in a 'post & rung' style, where the structure is framed like a box with ooen sides, or the 'staked' style, where the legs, arms, and back are all mortised into a thick plank seat?
Mark J
The description sounds like the library chairs from when I was in school. Carved wooden seat with a vertical slat back and surprisingly comfortable.
Chet
When thinking about chair designs there is a lot of detail that doesn't immediately meet the eye. I think I would defiantly prototype, but I would use poplar not ply. Adapting on the fly with hardwood lumber can get expensive real quick. The other option would be to find inexpensive chair from retail with a similar design, buy it and reverse engineer it.
