Mark J
Every so often my drill press "decides" to dump the chuck by "letting go" of the #2 Morse taper. It just happened to me again while drilling some walnut, 1/8" diameter and I hadn't gotten more than 1/2" to 3/4" deep, and I use peck technique. I can't figure out why this happens. Any thoughts? BonPacific
When I worked around a machine shop I saw some worn-to-hell spindles. Even a woodworking drill press can wear out. Any scratches or damage? Have you cleaned both mating surfaces after it skipped? If some grit got it there previously it may have damaged the taper. A trick I've seen is blueing the taper, installing and then uninstalling it. You can see if there are low spots that aren't mating up. Kind of a pain in the ass though.
Mark J
The DP is only a few years old. I didn't see any scratches. Before I put it back together I cleaned out the socket with a dowel wrapped with a paper towel and wiped off the taper as well.
Coop
Are you seating the chuck like this? https://www.google.com/search?q=how+to+seat+a+chuck+in+a+drill+press&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&hl=en-us&client=safari#kpvalbx=_2fTtYbigOd-5qtsP77CTgA015
Mark J
I did not go full mallet, I did tap the chuck against a block of wood using the quill travel. I suppose I could give it a rap with a wooden mallet tomorrow.
wtnhighlander
The 'blueing' that @BonPacific mentioned can be reasonably impersonated by sharpie ink.
