Connie Kort
Hi I have some pieces that have been previously stained and top coated with oil base product. I want to put another layer of water base top coat on top of this. Is this ok and what prep do 8 need to do
BonPacific
As long as it's completely cured it shouldn't interfere. You may have some adhesion issues, same as any time you use a product that doesn't "burn in" to previous layers. A light scuffing to tooth up the previous top coat may help with adhesion, just be careful not to dig into the stain and risk changing the color. I've finished a few pieces with an oil-varnish blend to start, letting it off-gas for a couple weeks, and then topping it with a water-based poly for protection. Haven't had any reported issues.
wtnhighlander
+1^ But if you have any doubt, shellac is widely used as a universal 'primer' between clearcoat layers that may not adhere well directly.
