How to measure something without a rule

There are a few ways to measure something without a ruler. One way is to use a known length as a reference and count the number of times it takes to span the object. Another way is to use a known width as a reference and count the number of times it takes to span the object.

I worked for a man that him and his brothers worked on his family farm. When they noticed some barbed wire down and needed to be replaced they grabbed a corn stalk. Worked fine. Fast forward a few decades. When he was looking for his tape or wooden ruler he was asking for his corn stalk...He is the one that told me about fart skins and frog hairs...
