wtnhighlander
I was browsing Bell Forest Products, and saw a spec I haven't run across before. The have this listing or cherry lumber: 4/4 Sel & Btr, 90/70+ Red, S2S to 15/16 Anyone know what the "90/70+" refers to? I also see 90/50+ on other thicknesses. Popular Post JohnG
Found this article. Sounds like percentage of heartwood on the face/back of the board. https://www.woodmagazine.com/wood-supplies/wood-species/getting-cherrys-digits 4
Popular Post Chestnut
A good note on species where heart wood is desirable EG walnut Cherry. If you get lower grades for example #1 Common, the percentage of heartwood is typically a lot higher. When logs are sawn the high grade of wood comes off the outside of the log and as they saw inward the grade typically decreases. For smaller furniture projects a lower grade is going to be good enough, it also allows you to buy more material and have more and better grain selection. As a side benefit the figure we often find appealing can sometimes be considered a defect depending on the client and the boards get thrown in the #1 com pile. I bought a bunch of #1 com walnut and the only pieces with sapwood were near quarter sawn pieces with sap on one edge. I also got quite a few boards with good crotch figure and curl.

Wish me luck!

Wish me luck! Shouldn't need it. $4 a bf for even crappy walnut isn't a bad price so as long as it's 1 step above dog barf you should be getting a fair deal.

Henry Mateo
The 90/70+ and 90/50+ numbers refer to the grade of the lumber. They mean that at least 90% of one side of both the front and back of the boards is free of flaws, and at least 70% or 50% of the other side is free of flaws.
