Hammer5573
I was watching a YouTube video of somebody using Rubio Wood Finish on a project that he was making and he was raving about it. I am not familiar with this product. Has anyone used it; is it just another oil...?
Mark J
The Woodwhisperer did a video on using Rubio Monocoat a few years ago. It's one of the hard wax oils as is Osmo Polyx-Oil. I've used the Osmo and it's become my go to finish. @Mick S is a devote of Osmo, too, but he hasn't been around in a while. A search here for the brand names, or for "hard wax oil" will turn up some threads.
Von
Adding to what Mark J said, Marc (aka The Woodwhisper) just released a video comparing Rubio and three other hard wax oil finishes: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tHEGIgtTlM0
Mark J
That is a good video. The testing was limited to two part products (including a new one from Osmo), but it leaves an obvious question, what advantage does a two part product have over a single component product. Advantages are...supposedly: single coat application and zero VOC. As we know, most of them look better with two coats even though you can get away with one. I talked with Osmo about their new 2-part product and told them that I sensed some apprehension on their part. They couldn't speak negatively about their product, of course, but it was clear to me that they only developed the 2-part product so they could have a competing zero-VOC product on the market. But in the end, they believe their regular Polyx Oil is the better product. 4
Mark J
I've been using Polyx-Oil for my woodturnings and am pretty happy with it. I like that I don't need to measure and mix, but I have no idea if it releases a lot of voc's. Further testing, perchance? By the way, the durability/repairablity discussion in the video was quite interesting.
