Popular Post gee-dub Posted September 15, 2025 Popular Post Report Posted September 15, 2025 Someone was talking about the price of cherry the other day. I just wanted to add some data to the brain trust . . . 8/4 hard maple, S2S, purchased this morning in SoCal was $5.79 a board foot. 3 1 Quote
legenddc Posted September 15, 2025 Report Posted September 15, 2025 Wow! My local dealer is $9.50 for rough 8/4 hard maple right now. The one 75 minutes from here has it listed at $5.95. Local dealer updates their price list frequently and the further one looks like it was last updated in May. Typically the local dealer is $.50-$1 more a board foot. Quote
Ron Swanson Jr. Posted September 15, 2025 Report Posted September 15, 2025 $5.79 is a nice price! My guy is at $7.50, assuming his site is up to date. Quote
Popular Post gee-dub Posted September 16, 2025 Author Popular Post Report Posted September 16, 2025 It is interesting how lumber is "market priced" like it is lobster or something . I do ask off and on about what the ballpark price of something is but mostly just buy what I need and smile, nod, and pucker up like a snare drum when the total is announced. If things seem way out of line I will ask for a re-check on the board footage but this is a rare occurrence. It is nice having a reliable yard nearby. I used to drive about 90 minutes to get my lumber. This probably (hopefully) explains why I have a large surplus since I would buy more than I needed to minimize my trips 4 Quote
Popular Post Coop Posted September 16, 2025 Popular Post Report Posted September 16, 2025 My fave has always been walnut says a guy with good tequila taste and cheap beer budget. But I’ve noticed an affection for cherry here lately as our 8 yo son is in need of new shoes. 3 Quote
Ron Swanson Jr. Posted September 16, 2025 Report Posted September 16, 2025 This thread is making me realize how fortunate i am to have multiple lumber resources available in town. We probably have 6-7 full lumber yards and a host of other options like woodcraft, rockler, etc. 2 1 Quote
BillyJack Posted September 16, 2025 Report Posted September 16, 2025 Even at suppliers for cabinet and furniture shops pay as well even with a discount. Volume is long but many don’t stock hard maple. I can call say Metro Hardwoods and they like every other supplier gets updated sheets on pricing... At one time Paxton lumber company stocked IPE, but not anymore as it’s too expensive to stock… 1 Quote

Help a fellow woodworker out I have been using Iverson and Siwek's but honestly still really really mis Youngbloods. What other options am I missing? Well Iverson is my go to, also. Nate is a great guy, his lumber is good and his prices are the best I've found. That said, and this is just off the top of my head... There's Siwik lumber on Marshall NE MPLS -- EDIT: sorry, i see you already mentioned them. Shaw Stewart on Johnson NE MPLS Forest Wood Products on 61 Maplewood Wood from the Hood, SE Mpls Sherer Bros in... Arden hills(?) Lake Elmo Hardwoods EDIT: It's now called Lampert Lumber Rockler and woodcraft Also, Fleet Farm sells some SLR hardwoods, but they don't have a huge selection. There's also a place in Savage called Discount Lumber Outlet, but that place is BS. They charge by the linear foot, not the board foot so there's nothing Discount about it. I too miss Youngbloods and their antique carts. That place was legendary! On another note, are you attending the MWWG Expo in October? I'd live to say hello if you are! 1 1 Quote
Ron Swanson Jr. Posted September 17, 2025 Report Posted September 17, 2025 Oh and how could i forget the most eccentric man in the wood biz? Logs to Lumber in Hastings. https://logs-to-lumber.com/ Quote
pkinneb Posted September 18, 2025 Report Posted September 18, 2025 Thanks for the list!! I am going to give some of these a try I have purchased from a few but not all. Ahh yes Logs to Lumber that's a unique one I have bought from a few times. I need to check out his location now that it appears he has moved out of his home. RE the expo unfortunately our car club pushed their fall drive to this weekend so I will not make it. Having said that I'll le you know the next time I'm on that side of town and we can meet up 1 Quote

I was just looking at the 2025 Northwoods expo projects and noticed your chair in there. One last thing, and then I'll shut up as i imagine most of these guys who don't live here are not interested in Minnesota lumber suppliers.... I found a sawmill a little west of the cities off of 12. I haven't been there but traded email with them and they're very friendly and welcoming. https://timmsawmill.com/ So another possibility there. Take care. 1 Quote
