mitch13
I have recently bought some Leopardwood (Roupala spp. (R. brasiliense,)) for a clock project I plan to start in the new year. Having made my purchase I then saw a sample of the timber finished with an oil product (I don’t know what) that made it look like mud. It was the striking appearance of the timber that made me chose it so I would be upset if it ended up looking awful due to the wrong finish being used. I had a look in understanding Wood Finishing by Flexner but it is not covered does any one know of a book or magazine article that covers Leopardwood as I am always happy to extend my woodworking library. I have never used Leopardwood before so any advice would be greatly received
duckkisser
best advise i ever got was make lots of sample pieces and and try different stuff and decide for yourself. best way to learn is to get dirty.
mds2
How different is leopard wood from lace wood? I've used BLO on lace wood and I looks very nice.
dwacker
Leopard is quite abit darker than lacewood. Pure oil finishes tend to muddy the grain. I like just water clear lacquer, so as not to change the color any more than needed. Don
