dcustoms
Does anyone know anything about Ross drum sanders? I found a used 26" 3hp. I just can't find any information about the brand of drum sander. Thanks for any help you all can give.
dwacker
The big ones were great. 3hp for a 26 is a little under powered for a single or dual drum. Unless its a super deal I'd skip it. Don
dcustoms
Don, Thanks! I have to admit I directed the post for you. The conveyer motor doesn't work it looks like i might get it for a few hundred bucks. I figure put a few more into it and i might have a decent sander. It is a single drum. I hear you on the 3hp motor thing. I'll have to really look at it. Thanks for the advice.
dwacker
Good deal. If its a two speed conveyer just make sure you turn it by hand to make sure the gear box isnt junk. Don
MIKWoodworking
Sounds like a good deal, I would go for it at that price!
dcustoms
Well I got the sander for $200. The main motor runs well and there are no vibrations while running. I just have to figure out the conveyor part of it. Also while I was moving it to the shop it fell over and now all 4 lead screws that control the height adjustment are slightly bent enough to make it impossible to move up and down. I think my plan is to remove the 4 lead screws and have them remade or I was looking at some similar macnines and the grizzly might offer a stock replacement. We shall see one problem just turned into another. Thanks for everyone's input.
MIKWoodworking
Wow, I am jealous, $200 is an amazing deal! Even with the work, I wish some one near me would sell one cheap
dcustoms
I just got done taking it apart and found a friend that can turn me new lead screws so that's no big deal. I also found out that it is actually a 5hp Leeson motor I was pretty excited about that.
dwacker
Cool, any luck with the conveyer motor. If it has a safety bar check that switch before tearing into the motor. Don
dcustoms
I haven’t played with the conveyer motor yet the guy who owned it took apart the control module so i am going to start there it is electronically speed controlled by a potentiometer. As soon as i get the new screw rods and get the thing back to gether I will start on the conveyer. It doesn't have a safety bar on it but I do want to look at the obvious before comitting to messing with the motor.
Popular Post Vincent Ross
Does anyone know anything about Ross drum sanders? I found a used 26" 3hp. I just can't find any information about the brand of drum sander. Thanks for any help you all can give. I can tell you anything you would like to know about them... I am the man who built them. And btw, if you are using it as a finish sander then 5 hp farm duty motors are very adequate. We did not produce any 3 hp 26 inch machines.. so if that is what is in it, someone else put it there. We also built 7-1/2 horsepower (and a 10 hp 3 phase), heavier duty versions for those who wanted to do dimensioning. The drive motors are available thru Graingers, and use SCR electronic infinitely variable controller (which is NOT a simple rheostat, it detects feedback from the motor and controls torque by frequency variance). I know the question was asked a couple years ago, but feel free to message me if anyone has further questions.

Vincent Ross
Thanks, Byrdie. I am a woodworker as well.. in fact it was looking for a decent drum sander for my shop that eventually ended up with me manufacturing them. I hope to put them back into production sometime, but am currently busy designing CNC router systems that I aim to put into production. I still do woodworking when I get the chance, so I will be bouncing in now and then to see what's new.

Byrdie
I think you might need to be validated or show more activity first but I'd suggest sending Vincent a PM and see if you can get his attention. Looks like he hasn't been in for a few weeks.
wdwerker
I just sent Mr Ross a PM for you. If he has it set up it should trigger an email to him. We can only wait and see now.
Byrdie
I knew there was a reason we keep you around, Steve. Wish I'd been thoughtful enough to send the PM rather than just suggest it.

Tieust
Mr Ross, I purchased one of your sanders a month ago and am trying to get it going. I was told that the DC drive motor was bad (the previous owner had removed it). I checked it with another DC controller and it works fine. I reinstalled it and started looking at the other controls and found a fuse on the back of the variable controller (250V / 3A) that was blown. I replaced the fuse and it immediately blew again. Any ideas? I appreciate your willingness to help all of us guys out! Have a blessed day!
