Bobby Slack
Wood ... alder Finish ... first coat ... 1/2 shellack & 1/2 denatured alcohol Second and third coats ... General Finishes gel stain - brown mahogany (had issues when I let this stay too much on the wood, took a lot of ellbow grease to work it) Next fourth coat - Shellac 100% ... I should have thinned this so it would be easier to work. I will do this next time. Last two coats. General finish - Enduro Var - Satin Urethane - I thinned this with 20% of water and made all the difference in the world. Not a fine woodworking piece but adecuate for a first one. Vic
Congrats, Bobby! Looks like you went with non stock lumber dimensions. Is that right?
Bobby Slack
Thanks both ... Not bad for the first piece. Lesson ... I need to do a better job sanding ... Sizes, yes, nothing standard. First I oversized the top and looked really strange. I also inserted cabinet bumpers on top of the case and under the top to create a shadow line.
