Pbmaster11
first post to "The critique room" Here is a butch block "table" i made for a clients customer. Includes knife storage (cherry strip). There is also a cherry strip in the sides, covering a mistake of cutting into the alignment biscuits. Client wanted to keep it affordable. So I used construction lumber for bottom... hard maple for the top.I would have liked to make the top thicker but for the budget the client gave me i couldn't afford to do so. I also though that a few slats on the bottom to make a storage shelf would have been nice.
Dave H
The table looks good, I like the way you covered your tracks i.e. the biscuit oops. I remember you asking about magnets for the knife slot, so is it magnatised, or just a slot looks nice either way just currios.
Pbmaster11
just a slot, the handles will keep them from falling through
duckkisser
reminds me of a project i made for brother in law. it is a traveling cuting board with a section for spices, and a slot in the back for the knife. i added magnets just to make shure the knife did not slide out while being carried outside. wanted something he could use next to the grill and then bring in to clean. jHop
Table looks nice! I agree that a couple of slats would work on the lower shelf... maybe if you did up a small square with 3/4 slats and 3/8 spacing, and a small square to fit inside, you could call it a serving tray -slash - shelf? Think the client would spring for another $50 -$100 for additional function? (Not like the table needs it. Just thinking out loud, as it were. Nicely done!) sbarton22
I think it looks very nice! The fix is awesome and I love the knife slot. How exactly did you make that slot? It is great.

S Barton, I took a slice of cherry longer than my final piece. I cut out one slice for the side, then adjusted the rip fence to around 1/8 (this will determine the slot width)... I then cut another slit for the other side. Around 1/4" for the sides. I cut the ends off the center piece, about 4-6" and glue them. (leaving out the middle to create the slot) Hope that made sense! MTC
Nice Job! were you concerned that the blades prodruding below the top?
sbarton22
AH!! I didn't notice that they were multiple pieces! I do like the idea of adding in a magnet strip if they are separate pieces to assemble. I like it!
sbarton22
Nice Job! were you concerned that the blades prodruding below the top? I thought about this as well, and assumed it was a standard thing since no one else mentioned it.
Pbmaster11
They will protrude through the bottom, should be fine.
Jasahan
love everything about it. I'm a pretty big fan of chunky styles. super creative way to fix the mistake, too.
MTC
I thought about this as well, and assumed it was a standard thing since no one else mentioned it. I just hate the idea of knives hanging below the top - makes me shiver!

Ironman50
The storage shelf as well as the contrast of hues are great ideas!
section1
All you need is to replace the top with a marble stone and you have a dedicated sharpening station
