chicks82
You ever been looking for a piece of furniture because you really don't want to build it, but when you come across the the design you like you almost faint at the price. Well that's exactly what happened to my brother and his wife when they were looking for night stands. They found the ones they wanted at crate and barrel and each one would have cost them $500 each. So whats my brother do? He calls me up and says hey want to make some night stands. So he sent me the link so i knew what we were building. I drew up the plans and bam off to the races we were. Here are some photos of them https://www.dropbox.com/sh/2lcgt5s4etfrzv0/Umq7BmAYQF. Let me know what you think.
Beechwood Chip
Wow! Nice design. The tops look like they are almost unsupported. What kind of joint did you use to attach the top to the back? How thick are the top and the back?
chicks82
Top and back are 6/4 I used a mortise and tenon to join the back. It is reenforced with screws though. I was able to sit on them with out any problems and i weigh in the 260-280 area.
Eric.
That's impressive strength for that joint! Well done. $500 each for those at Crate and Barrel, huh? Unreal.
rmac
Pay yourself a decent wage and see if you can make one for $500. Bet you can't! -- Russ
Eric.
Pay yourself a decent wage and see if you can make one for $500. Bet you can't! -- Russ No, of course not. Not handmade, heirloom quality furniture out of a small hobbyist or pro shop. I'm just amazed that C&B can get people to pay $500 for those tables when they're made the semi-garbage, mass-produced way. On a side note, though, I bet I could pay myself a decent wage if I made ten of them for $5,000.
Beechwood Chip
Ahh, but if you made 10 you'd need sales and distribution. That's either more time for you, or more money to pay someone else.
chicks82
my brother and I figured that if it was just one guy working on them it would have ben about 35 plus some change an hour to make them. If you were to make more then one. The construction of them is very simple. Here is a link to the plans https://www.dropbox.com/sh/43cvmj5jwcz71t7/6-NSeeLuWd
section1
A job very well done mate but I'm astonished at the $500 part.

Guido_de
Those are lovely; in fact, I'm very much considering to give them a shot myself. Could you tell me what kind of finish you applied and what material you used? Kind regards from Germany Guido
chicks82
It is all poplar and baltic birch. The finish is General Finishes Black Poly.
ChetlovesMer
Those are awesome. I'm actually going to show them to my wife. She's been on my to make new bedroom furniture. We've gone 3 years without any... that's right just a king-sized bed in the middle of the room. Actually its getting embarrasing. I have a huge shop with thousands upon thousands of dollars in tools and not a single stick of bedroom furniture. She loves modern and "Sorry, Marc" she hates Greene and Greene... Rick A McQuay
The design isn't my taste; however, functionally I like them and the craftsmanship looks solid.
