Guillaume Breton
Hello all. I will be making a buffet starting monday in school. Will be made with Mahogany. With the tips i got from here and a lot of trial and error, the panels will be covered with vegetable leather i'll emboss myself and rivet to the panels. i'll emboss a design similar to this in the doors and in the side panels + drawers etc in the end, it should give something like this : spent a couple hours doing the sketchup model, play with it if you want. Buffet Normal View.zip i'll keep updating with some pictures as the projets moves forward !

Guillaume Breton
it will ! i will use that technique to emboss the leather pannels

Bombarde16
Looks like an enjoyable build and blogging the leather part will be a welcome addition to the forum. If I may, the base (moldings and feet) looks a little more massive than necessary. Maybe it's the camera angle, but I wonder if you couldn't adjust the size a little and lighten the proportions down there.

The one i picked goes along with what you recommand. I already started to mill but forgot my camera, i'll bring it tomorrow ! ty for the comments
Guillaume Breton
Here we go ! milling started today. jointed and planed most of what i'll need ! marking everything to avoid mistakes! My little netbook so i can double check with my sketchup design! near the end of the day i had most tenons/mortises and dados done. more to come tomorrow! Guillaume Breton
Today i finished all the pieces except the 2 doors and 2 drawers. i made dovetails for the upper front ... "traverse" hehe sorry i dont know the english term. even though the top will cover it i find it adds a little touch and solidity if i decide not to use glue at all. did a dry assembly to check where i'd have to ajust. marked the areas with some masking tape. only had time to make the 2 back panels. its 4/4 i resaw in 2 to make a bookmatch for each pannel. its in the back but hey, why not ! i planed them down to 6 mm and they "jammed" in the planner and "burned" so i had a loooooooot of sanding to do. the bookmatch dosnt show that much now but it will once the finish is applied no mistakes untill i cut the bottom. you can see it on the left here. i cut it to 924mm instead of 934, grrr... it sits in dados all around the bottom of the buffet. so, what i did is to cut it in half, remove 20 mm of each side, and add a piece in between the 2 parts with a dado/grove and put it back together. in the end, it will make the bottom stronger. the pict isnt very clear but i'll take a better one soon. its almost like it was planned! TRBaker
Guillaume, it looks great so far.....nice work. Remember, one of the marks of a good woodworker is being able to hide your mistakes and make them look like part of the design.

Bombarde16
Doubtless the English have a fancy word for these, but I'd just call them "recesses". Great work!

Guillaume Breton
today i continued the drawers, they are pretty much done. needed to adjust them a little. also made the 2 front doors. mortise and tenons with a recess so i can put the panels with the leather later on. i will cap them with some molding, the same molding i'll put around every recess where leather will be. Guillaume Breton
today was the glueup ! i used traditionnal fish glue (colle de poisson in french) which im sure is not the right translation ! started with the drawers. I have some rocking on one of them. the front seemed to have bowed after i made the recess. i'll have to adjust that this is the big plank i'll use for the top. 1 plank ! hehe i already went ahead and true it up and jointed it on a 16 inch jointer, and did the remaining 2 inches by hand, then planed it down to 1 inch. here is a friend holding it for me ! the back was already glued up so i glued up the front today and waited 4 hours, which is fast for that kind of glue, they recommend 12 hours. It has a 1h opening though so it helps when glueing complicated parts like that. And it is a lot more elastic than vinilic glue. and a the end of the day, i was able to glue the front + back + side pannels together. Even with an 1h opening glue, i always end up sweating like crazy when doing that kind og glueup ! next tuesday (no school monday) i'll work on the top and the moulding. Might go and buy my leather monday !
Guillaume Breton
finished the drawers and the adjustment. Did a grove in the drawers themselves so they'd slide on these pieces of wood i screwed on the inside. The drawers are "floating" and the gap is even all the way around them. then i started to work on the moulding. did the small center one on the router table and the bid one for the bottom on the shaper. i still have 1 side to glue up tomorrow. I put a small line of glue on the back of the moulding and then i hammer 1/4 wood "plugs" ?? into the wood. its the same wood, mahogany, but since its end grain it show up a lot darker , i like it. the whole buffet is made like this, very little glue also got my leather today ! will probable start working on this by the end of the week ! im excited/scared since its the main focus of the build ! Guillaume Breton
Today I installed the door hmmm.. hinges i think its called. and i also made and put on the "legs" under the bottom moulding. They do not touch the ground, they are glued onto the real legs that are underneath. I also made some color testing and i decided to color some tung oil with some "natural ombre" and "burnt sienna" natural pigments. mixed about 3 parts of red for 1 brown, and i like the results, i'll take a picture tomorrow
Guillaume Breton
Here we go ! the color is applied. still not sure if i will make an intermediary coat, darker, and work it with steel wool to give it a more antique look. 1 plank for the top, love mahogany ! hehe started on the leather also. made small tests on cut off pieces just before the end of the class today, didn't have much time. just wanted to know if it was out of my reach or not, and i must say its pretty "easy" im happy, i should be able to do what i wanted. Guillaume Breton
Great progress on an ambitious project! Thanks for sharing updates. MERCI. today, i made another semi small test and tried to apply the dye to the leather. One thing i learned is that i'll put some kind of winter gloves or cotton gloves for the real pannels cause my nails did scrath that surface quite a lot. I was kinda holding the leather with my nails without realizing it untill it was to late hehe. i think it will come out pretty neat ! Bombarde16
Fantastic. How are you going to attach the leather to the panels?
Guillaume Breton
Fantastic. How are you going to attach the leather to the panels? yes,. i will glue then either with contact cement or the traditional fish glue my only concern is that i wont be able to equalize the pannels since i wont put leather in the inside. but if i "seal" the pannels with some wipe-on poly from the inside it should be ok. Guillaume Breton
So, started to work on the glaze. Was long since i started with some tung oil + pour -N- Wipe, the water based glaze had a hard time to adhere. had to steel wool the entire buffet, but it worked. I'l be able to switch back to oil finish for the top coats and it wont disturb the glase. while it was drying, i worked on my leather panels. I'm done marking (1st step) and i had time to cut 1 panel. 3 more to go + all the smaller pieces ! i brought the leather home tonight so i can progress a little. once the glaze was dry, i started working on it with a steel wool, testing different degrees of darkness. If i even go to far, i can just reapply some glaze and start over. i'm still not sure i want it as dark as it is at the moment since the leather panels will be black. I also want that mahogany to show a little ! hehe getting there !
