trz
I need to make several four ft. long taper cuts from 1 1/4" to nothing from 2x4s . What saw/ technique would you use?
Tpt life
Jointer. Or hand planes. The technique demonstrated.
4-Square
It's the 'to nothing' that worries me... Unless you use a backer on the 2x4, I wouldn't use the jointer method... Actually, I'd avoid any method using power tools on any operation with a 'to nothing' requirement. You can 'get it close' on a table saw, band saw and/or jointer, but I'd only go the last mile with a hand plane.
Tpt life
I assume the "to nothing" means cutting nothing based on the OP wording. In other words 3.5" to 2.25" in 4'. OP please let us know which interpretation is correct. If 4-Square has it, I have always clamped the two by and used a circ saw. This tends to leave a sloppy edge. wdwerker
It all depends on the level of quality you need. Is it going to be visible , or caulked and painted ? A sharp quality blade on a decent skill saw with a good straightedge should do the trick. The straightness of your wood will also affect the quality of your results. mds2
I would use a table saw with a sled. My longest sled is the side of an old entertainment center that I put a runner on the bottom of. Works great for jointing or cutting tapers.
..Kev
Table saw and a taper jig would be my first thought.
