chalk on plywood

I recently did a walnut project where I used chalk to mark the orientation of the pieces. It can be a real bear to get it all out of the grain! Since you are worried about sanding through the veneer, I would suggest starting with a shop vac, then a stiff bristled brush, then use mineral spirits, then sand if you really have to.
